Local Government Funding Shortages

So... when do the hints begin to drop around the nation of local government funding shortages due to increased fuel costs ?

I guess they've already started.

  • Volusia County officials will seek permission this week to add another $645,000 to the $3.78 million projected in next year's budget for gas.

  • County departments are looking at how last week’s spike in gas prices will affect their immediate and long-term transportation and operation budgets, and the initial answers are not encouraging.

  • “We’re really going to be hurting for the rest of the year and for 2006,” said Richard Schultz, finance and administrative services director for Two Rivers.

  • Clerk-treasurers in Brown-stown and Crothersville say their already tight budgets will feel more crunching as a result of the skyrocketing pump prices.

Apparently, one way to reduce government is to increase fuel costs.

    A Challenge to Historians

    Here's the question:

During a national disaster, when was the last time that the leader of any nation took over 48 hours to either return to the seat of government power or to the scene of that disaster in order to focus the nation's efforts on the disaster?

Any country. Any leader. Anytime since World War II. Are there examples?
