"Britain on alert for deadly new knife with exploding tip that freezes victims' organs." It's a legitimate item, clearly not for most people, but what is the alert about?

I see someone fell for a story in the Daily Mail again. No alerts here, though every day there's a story about knife crime being up.

They're talking about selling kitchen knives without tips now, since they can't be used for murder as easily. I use kitchen knives more than most, and I can't see that that would interfere with my work in the kitchen at all.

I guess I don't understand - isn't it relatively easy for someone to craft their own knife? After all, you see examples from prisons.

Or are the knives primarily being used as a weapon in the heat of the moment?

Young people carry knives here, but I don't know if they're kitchen knives or switchblades. It's pretty easy to walk into your kitchen and get a knife that will kill someone, whereas it's rather more difficult to fashion a knife. And we're talking about lazy young people here--not hardened criminals, so the work involved is a factor.

I don't think overall violent crime is as high here as in the US. But media coverage of it is as high. I swear every time I turn on the radio I hear a report about knife crime being studied by this or that gov't body.
