Why do government offices close for Columbus Day?

Because it used to be a bigger deal than it is now. I think the tide turned around the Bicentennial, when greater awareness of Columbus' genocide started to permeate the culture.

I don't mind holidays, I just think there's better choices to be made for ones that provide for government service stoppage. What's wrong with celebrating this one instead?
