Long-term drug treatment slows down the decline in lung function that occurs in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), researchers reported here at the American Thoracic Society 2007 International Conference (ATS).
The Towards a Revolution in COPD Health (TORCH) study, which followed 6,112 patients with COPD from 42 countries for 3 years, found that patients receiving salmeterol/fluticasone propionate had a smaller decrease in lung volume compared with patients receiving a placebo (30 vs 55 mL per year, respectively).
