Trying this again

A few weeks ago, using Avedon Carol's blogroll, I posted this:

below are a list of blogs that I would appreciate being blogrolled from, and that I think the content here is appropriate to be blogrolled from on a regular basis. And I'd provide a link back, obviously. I'm mostly curious as to whether anyone will salute such an approach - you know, blog barter diplomacy.

It worked better than I expected - and I've added several blogs to the blogroll due to it, and so, I thought I'd try it again. This time, I'll use Skippy's blogroll, as seen below:

That is a fun idea, and I'm glad to see it's working for you. I appreciate the compliment of the solicitation. If nothing else, it's an interesting way to expand other bloggers' awareness of your work, since I'd not run across your blog before.

On Grits, though, I'm afraid I'll decine. Not for any slight to your blog, but because I focus on a narrow range of issues, almost entirely at the state level. Also, I frequently and fairly ruthlessly cull my blogroll and add new ones so that it reflects what I'm actually reading, and after perusing your content, you probably don't cover my issues enough to make the cut based on that metric.

One other thought on your experiment, which again, I think is fun and clever, but just to offer a counterpoint - over the 2.5 years I've been blogging I've come to think less of # of links or even traffic as metrics, at least for political blogs, but impact in the world on the topics you write about. Blogs are for elites and information seekers, not a masss audience.

What I want for my own blog is not a huge number of readers but QUALITY readers - in politics that means opinion leaders, media, activists, and government workers and officials. If you only have ten readers but one is a decisionmaker who acts on your information, that's better than 2,000 people reading a link from INstapundit.

Suerte, amigo - I'll check back from time to time. Quien sabe? Maybe you'll earn the link yet through quality blogging fare! best,

hey. i'm happy to blogroll you. i think smaller blogs can collectively beef up their profile online by making a practice of reciprocating links from each other. i'm also trying to make a regular habit of posting link farms to posts from smaller blogs to foster more cross-blog conversation.

I am similar, in that I cover "mostly" local Connecticut stuff, but my way around it is to have a "local pubs" Blogroll and a national one labeled "top shelf"...

It costs me nothing to link to another Blog... But it does raise their rankings on search engines (every link counts! lol). The most effective tool we have in helping everyone, and ourselves, at the same time.

This is a good idea, and I'm happy to see it getting such a positive response in your comments.

At the same time, I regret to say that I am declining your kind and generous offer.

My link policy is a simple one: I link in my blogroll to anyone whom I source for a blog post. I expect nothing in return from those to whom I link. My linking is all about what I read and what catches my interest, and not at all about those whose interest I catch.

Because I use resources like del.icio.us to cast my net wide for things to write about, I'm not just limiting myself to picking up what the top tier bloggers have already blogged. It's not like I'm the Great Orange Satan when it comes to my blogroll.

Thank you for thinking of me, and good luck.

The blogroll on my site is the list of blogs I'm currently reading. I'll happily add you to the list -- but be warned, I've self-imposed a limit on the number of blogs in my blogroll as a way of keeping my blog-reading habit under control. Any time I add a new blog to my blogroll, I force myself to remove an old one, so no guarantees of permanence. (full explanation here)

You are in. Actually went you one better. Since I have been trying to encourage blogs reciprocally linking, I made your post my "Post of the Week."

You have a fascinating idea. What would take it one step further would be if everyone on your list would agree to link with everyone else.

Now a few snobs won't play this game. I have written firedoglake and Booman a dozen times and never received the courtesy of a reply. I guess they don't think too much of us "little people." I put them in the same class as DKos, etc. with their "purge."

Take care and keep blogging!

liberalamerican, I don't think it's necessarily a matter of snobbery. If you're a blogger, you have to decide what your blogroll is. Is it an "if you like me, you'll also like ___" list? Is it a "these are all the people who link to me, regardless of who they may be" list? Is it a list of the sites you, the blogger read and check regularly?

All three might be useful things to have. Simply having a mass mutual link-fest, without regard to who's out there, seems to me to throw open the doors rather wider than I care to. It also could multiply your blogroll into the thousands in a matter of a few days. I find that even if 200 or so sites link to mine (I think that's roughly the current figure), most of my traffic only comes from one tenth of them, and literally none from the rest. But that could be my case only.

At any rate, thanks for making me think about what my blogroll is, which, currently, I'd have to describe as a muddle.

I am pretty certain that skippy would give a tip of the hat to that hillarious "CONservative" with the "Liberal Blogrolling policy", Jon swift. But yes, skippy deserves a lot of credit for getting more people to think about it.
