John Scalzi on Being Poor

As part of what should be the national discussion about class and society, this piece ought to be published in every newspaper and read on every television channel and radio station in the land.

Just one sentence: Being poor is knowing how hard it is to stop being poor.

Go read it.

Being poor might be standing in line waiting on the woman in front of me at the grocery store who was wearing alligator heels and alligator matching handbag...good jewelry...coifed hair...beautiful nails and a coat to rival Paris Hilton. She handed over food stamps for her purchases. I went out the doors only to see her drive away in a Rolls Royce. No joke...I know my cars...and I know alligator when I see it. Must have fallen on hard times I guess...it can happen to anyone. But I don't think she should have gone to the "store" like that...she might as well have gone as Batman...she might not have been so noticed.
